Oil, canvas...same sitter as Saint No. 33. She has irresistibly paintable features.

I guess this is basically a study, yet I worked it till a completion that kinda goes beyond what I would consider a true "study". What I was doing was playing with my fields of black. Trying to work into them without losing the heavier chiaroscuro effect, but getting rid of that student "This is shadow, let's just paint black and lose form" kinda trap. I wanted to keep the volume of the subject. You know what I mean.

I was also playing with brush work. Using a heavier impasto surface as the underpainting (mostly in the hair).

But, because I can't focus a camera, and both of the things that I was doing don't photograph well. This post becomes kinda stupid.

I don't care what anybody says... You can't photograph an oil painting and have it be anything more than a photograph. All of the depth, all of the texture, all of the "life"...GONE.

this is gorgeous, the lighting, the composition, your technique... :faint:

I know just how beautiful this is. You are amazing. I will always know (not think) so.

this is awesome bro. it would be an insult to say that it looks like a photo, because it doesn't, save for the quality which is excellent! your work is far richer than someone can easily get out of a camera, and your perfect flesh-tones and the way they react in the light source are crazy-stunning! it just ain't fair man, when you get that good you should have to dig out an eye, or nip off a finger or something to make those like me feel better about themselves! ;) you're a master of realism indeed!

Man... that "not look like a photo" compliment is so nice... That feels great to hear. You will make me all puffy with pride. But that will last like ten minutes or so, and then I'm back to feeling like a failure again. Isn't it fun to be a painter?
:iconadnagaporp:
being a painter sucks balls but I love it because of the saturated sadness and seems rather androgynous with power. it is....disturbingly perfected.
:iconbenecane:
lol! i know exactly what you mean!!! the demons certainly have 1) a larger appetite than we can satisfy, and 2) a way talking to you in a way that you believe them! bastards! don't listen to them, we don't get our sense of worth from demons, other people or even ourselves for that matter. just do what you do "ad majorum dei glorium" and leave it be. you're awesome at what you do, that's just the way it is.

i agree that you can't take a picture of a painting because it is no longer a painting. it is just a picture of a painting. ok on with it! her eyes look on the verge of tears which is beautiful. her hair and lips are just amazing. i love the shadowing on the side of her face. i am always in awe of people who paint portraits. they look so real. this is wonderful. great job.

thats beutiful......
?Do you think that oil is easier or better than acrylic?
:icondoc-hammer:
Oil can give you a much deeper surface than acrylics. And once you understand it's inherent transparent/opaque properties, oil is far more versatile. But you can dry acrylics with a hairdryer, so...whatever.

Neither medium is easy. Paining is not easy, and painting figures is a fucking magic trick. It's impossible, and anybody who tells you otherwise is either lying or just plain sucks as a painter.

Hey, well, the painting still shines enough in the photo that I can only imageine how it looks in person. The lighting values are really fabulous here. I especially like how her right eye has that highlight on it, for some reason. Nice work again.

I'm just curious, are these people you paint people that you know in person, or do you paint from photos?
